The Maltese women’s national team retained the European Championship Division C title after beating Armenia 74-65 in the final in Yerevan.

Malta were leading 36-23 at half-time but Armenia, who were hosting the tournament, came back as play resumed to set up a tense finale.

However, Malta held tight to preserve their lead and secure the title for a second time running after the success of 2008 in Luxembourg. In the group matches, Malta beat Wales and Scotland before eliminating Moldova in the semi-finals.

Malta duo Josephine Grima and Rebecca Brincat Thoresen were selected in the team of the tournament by the FIBAEurope organisers.

The squad returns home late on Sunday (tomorrow).
