The Planning Authority Board has given the go-ahead for the relocation of the Valletta bus terminus to the area below St James Counterguard in Valletta.
The project forms part of the bus service reform.
The project will see commuters alighting at the area known as Il-Biskuttin near City Gate and board the buses in the St James Counterguard ditch (close to where the Sunday open market is set up).
The terminus will be substantially smaller than the present one. It will be composed of just 14 bus bays close to the bastion walls. The case officer said there would be fewer buses at the terminus because other major hubs would be created in other localities, eliminating the need for commuters to go to Valletta to catch connecting buses. Buses would also have less waiting time at the terminus.
Seven kiosks currently at the City Gate bus terminus will be erected on the new site, although their structure will be revamped using glass and coloured aluminium.
