Gloria Stuart, who earned an Oscar nomination for playing an older version of Kate Winslet’s character in the blockbuster Titanic, has died at the age of 100, her family said.

As a glamorous young blond she had been a leading lady in the 1930s, but took a long break from movies after the early 1940s and became an accomplished painter, according to the IMDb industry database, in an online obituary.

She returned to TV and the silver screen in the 1970s and 1980s, but it was her role in the epic film version of Titanic’s final hours which shot her to global fame.

At the age of 87 she was nominated for best supporting actress for her role as the 101-year-old Rose Calvert, remembering her torrid love affair with Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jack Dawson, as the stricken ship went down.
