We recently commemorated the centenary of the birth of George Borg Olivier. We have rightly highlighted his achievements in the constitutional and economic sectors, especially with his acquisition of independence for Malta and the transformation of Malta’s economy from one based on military services’ spending to one based on manufacturing and tourism. His achievements were indeed substantial.
But equally so are his achievements in the educational field. In his nine years in office (1962-71), his administration managed to build more than 30 primary and secondary schools, as well as three technical institutes, the University and extended MCAST and St Michael’s Training College.
His administration also began introducing student support services like guidance and counselling and psychological services. Another feather in his cap was the introduction of secondary education for all and the abolition of fees at the University.
It can truly be said that Dr Borg Olivier and his Cabinet laid the foundation for a modern and efficient system of education for independent Malta. I hope his achievements in education will be adequately acknowledged for posterity.
