The new US embassy at Ta' Qali was officially inaugurated this evening.
The press were this morning taking on a tour of the compound, whcih is spread over 40,400 square metres.
The land acquired from the Maltese government in 2006 for €14.6m.
Embassy officials explained the size of the embassy was determined by safety regulations introduced by the US government following the embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar Es-Salam in the late 1990s.
The embassy brings together a number of facilities that were previously spread around the island, including the marine residential quarters, warehousing facilities and more spacious offices.
The US has not yet nominated a new ambassador for Malta following the resignation of Douglas Kmiec in April. The Embassy is currently under the direction of Chargé d'Affaires Richard M. Mills, Jr.
