Europa League hopefuls Olympiakos Volos, who have Malta forward Andrè Schembri on their books, and Kavala have been relegated from the Greek top flight to the second division because of their alleged involvement with a match-fixing ring.
The disciplinary committee of the Super League also fined both clubs €300,000 and banned their respective owners, Achilleas Beos and Makis Psomiadis, for life from attending matches.
Both clubs argued that the decision is invalid, and would fight to remain in the 16-team Super League. The appeals committee of the Greek football federation will most likely make its final definitive decision next week. The clubs also argued that Beos and Psomiadis have not yet gone to trial.
Olympiakos Volos also face expulsion from the Europa League. UEFA will most likely not take action until the final appeal is heard.
If the decision stands, then the two teams which were relegated at the end of last season, Panserraikos Serres and Larissa, will remain in the Super League.
