Oscar-winning star Emma Thompson has told of her “honour” at being asked to revive children’s favourite Peter Rabbit – the first fresh story from Beatrix Potter’s publisher for more than 80 years.

The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit will be published next year to mark the 110th anniversary of the furry, carrot-swiping scamp.

It marks the first time Frederick Warne has published a further book to the collection written by Potter from 1902 to 1930.

The story, which will come out in September 2012, will be the 24th tale in the Peter Rabbit series.

Ms Thompson said: “I’ve always loved Beatrix Potter, as a child and then as a mother and all the years in-between as well.

“When Mr Rabbit invited me to write a further tale, I was more honoured than I can say. I hope I don’t let him or his extraordinary creator down.”

Thompson has a family pedigree in writing for children as her father Eric scripted TV hit The Magic Roundabout, as well as writing books about the characters. The actress has also narrated her father’s stories for BBC Radio 4.
