The sky will be the limit when some of the best Maltese and international pyrotechnic manufacturers compete in the Malta International Fireworks Festival between April 29 and May 1 at the Grand Harbour.
Six fireworks factories will present displays each lasting a minimum of 14 minutes.
Culture Minister Mario de Marco said the foreign participants were from Canada, the UK, Austria, Croatia and Poland. Malta will be represented by St Michael’s Fireworks Factory of Lija. A call was made among Maltese fireworks factories to take part in the 11th edition of the competition but only St Michael’s applied.
Dr de Marco said the festival, which had become an integral part of the country’s cultural calendar, attracted thousands of Maltese and foreigners.
A cruise liner will spend the night at Grand Harbour on May 1 when the grand finale of the festival will take place.
Just before the start of the festival, Malta will host an international symposium on fireworks. The event takes place every two years, bringing together pyrotechnic professionals and stakeholders from around the world.
The symposium, between April 23 and 27, will attract about 300 delegates, according to Dr de Marco.
The opening night of the symposium will start with a pyrotechnic display against the backdrop of Mdina. More than 22 Maltese fireworks factories will take part in the symposium’s pyrotechnic and groundwork displays in Mellieħa, St Paul’s Bay and Għarb.
