Tennis: Andy Roddick has confirmed his participation in the Championships at The Queen’s Club in June. The American, who won the Wimbledon warm-up event in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007, joins Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin Del Potro in what should be a stellar field. Roddick beat Roger Federer in Miami last week and is confident he is building momentum for the rest of the season.

Motorcycling: Spain’s Dani Pedrosa was arrested over holding a false boat licence his lawyers said. The 26-year-old – a two-time 250cc world champion and also once in the 125cc category – was arrested and then later released along with 20 others in Valencia the local justice authorities revealed. Pedrosa – who is awaiting the decision of the judge as to whether he will be charged or not – admitted to making a mistake after “a bad advice”.

Cricket: Sachin Tendulkar (picture) yesterday stepped down as Mumbai Indians skipper on the eve of the Indian Premier League, saying he needed a “break from captaincy”. The batting superstar, who led Mumbai in all of the previous four editions of the IPL, will be replaced by off-spinner Harbhajan Singh as captain in the Twenty20 tournament that starts today. Tendulkar, who smashed an unprecedented 100th international century last month, said the new captain would have his “wholehearted support”.

Basketball: Reggie Miller, who played his entire 17-year career with the Indiana Pacers, was named to the American Basketball Hall of Fame. Miller is the Pacers’ all-time leading scorer and a five-time National Basketball Association all-star. Also named to the Hall of Fame this week were former NBA players Ralph Sampson, Jamaal Wilkes and ex-player and NBA coach Don Nelson. Miller finished as Indiana’s all-time leader with 25,279 points.

Cycling: German-born Philip Hindes will be the latest addition to Britain’s sprint team as the Olympic champions look to put together the perfect trio for the London Games. Hindes, a 19-year-old who has dual nationality, has raced for Germany at the junior world championships but this week will take part in his first senior world championships for the country of his father.
