We disagree with the development permit issued by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority for the construction of a retreat house and visitors’ centre opposite Ta’ Pinu church in Gozo.
The area in question is outside the development zone. On this we expected Mepa chairman, Austin Walker, to take a constant position, even if the others on the Mepa board voted in favour. Approval of this development shows that the Church authorities are treated differently when it comes to abiding by planning regulations and laws.
The fact that Mepa’s board imposed certain conditions on this development, such as to cover the roof with soil and vegetation to give it a similar appearance to the surrounding fields, means that the development in question is not suitable for that area.
The area is picturesque and of natural beauty.
