A rare wooden air raid shelter sign has been added to the growing collection of wartime memorabilia on display at the new Malta at War Museum in Vittoriosa.
Very few wooden signs of this nature survive today. The weather-beaten sign measures is 30 x 60 x 2 centimetres and parts of its lower edge are missing. The painted text Air Raid Shelter Entrance is clearly visible.
The sign was conserved in-house by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna employees.
It has been placed on display along other forms of signage in the museum gallery dedicated to civil defence in WW2. The sign was originally donated by Denis A. Darmanin, FWA founder-member, who had found it lying on the floor in an air raid shelter at the old Tigne’ Artillery Barracks in Sliema.
The Malta at War Museum has recently undergone a complete revamp and expansion through a substantial grant received from the European Regional Development Fund
The museum features seven galleries all of which are dedicated to a given aspect of the daily life in wartime Malta.
It is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
