Frequent power cuts in several localities are reducing Malta to third world status, the FORUM group of trade unions said today.

In a statement signed by president John Bencini in the wake of the latest cuts in several areas of Malta and Gozo, the group said that no country in the European Union suffered such frequent outages.

"We are in 2012 and we have ended up as a third world country, if not worse, in such a vital sector," the group said, adding that this summer would go down as a summer of hardship for the elderly, the sick and businesses, in particular.

The group said many people were ending up emptying their fridges and could not sleep without fans or airconditioners.  Businesses were closing early and thousands of euro in production had been lost by firms such as ST.

The group said Enemalta was not convincing anyone on the reasons it gave for the cuts (cable faults), adding that it was 'certain' that the power stations were not keeping up with demand.

FORUM said the minister responsible for this sector should assume his responsibilities and be held to account.
