VUELTA A ESPANA

• Alberto Contador of Spain remains the overall leader of the 2012 Vuelta a Espana after the race’s last mountain stage was won by Russia’s Denis Menchov on Saturday. With one stage remaining, Contador leads ahead of Alejandro Valverde of Spain, with Joaquim Rodriguez third. Australian Richie Porte finished second behind Menchov in Saturday’s 171 kilometre stage to the race’s final summit finish at La Bola de Mundo, with Belgium’s Kevin De Weert in third.

BASKETBALL

• Former Indiana Pacers superstar Reggie Miller and coaching great Don Nelson were among those inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday. Miller, one of the greatest clutch scorers in NBA history, played his entire 17-season career with the Indiana Pacers and finished it with 25,279 points and 1,505 steals. He ranks second on the NBA all-time list for three-pointers made, with 2,560, and his 320 playoff three-pointers are the most for any player in the post-season. Nelson has more than 1,300 NBA victories and is one of only two coaches to be named NBA Coach of the Year three times.

ATHLETICS

• The parents of Olympic gold medalist Tianna Madison have sued the US track star, saying she spread stories they were out for their own interest and tormented and cheated her out of money. Robert and Jo Ann Madison filed the libel, slander and defamation lawsuit Thursday in an Ohio court. Tianna Madison was on the winning 4x100-metre relay track team at the London Olympics. She won the gold with Allyson Felix, Bianca Knight and Carmelita Jeter in world record time. The lawsuit also names her husband John Bartoletta. Madison’s parents’ are seeking more than $25,000 in damages.

RUGBY UNION

• The All Blacks struggled to a 21-5 victory over a gallant Argentina at Westpac Stadium yesterday to remain unbeaten in the Rugby Championship despite another error-filled performance. Argen-tina, with little possession but a well-organised defence, were still in with a chance until the 66th minute when the All Blacks scored the first of their two tries. The All Blacks now have three wins from three outings while Argentina have two losses and a draw but have shown they are not far off the pace in their first year in the southern hemisphere competition. Other result: Australia vs S. Africa 26-19.

CHICAGO MARATHON

• Chicago Marathon director Carey Pinkowski confirmed yesterday that the ban meted out to Lance Armstrong by the US Anti-Doping Agency means the cyclist can’t run in the race. Pinkowski issued a statement after Armstrong spokesman Mark Fabiani told Runnersworld.com that the cyclist and cancer activist, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life for multiple doping infractions by USADA, had been told he couldn’t enter the October 7 event.

CRICKET

• Jacques Kallis guided South Africa to a seven-wicket win over World Twenty20 champions England in the first Twenty20 international at Chester-le-Street yesterday. The Proteas were in trouble at 29 for three, chasing a seemingly modest 119 for victory. But opener Kallis , made 48 not out off 44 balls with seven fours. Together with left-hander JP Duminy (47 not out) he shared an unbroken stand of 90 in 91 deliveries as the Proteas, who won with an over to spare, went 1-0 up in a three-match series.
