James Bond shook and stirred the public into flocking to the cinema last year, with the latest 007 instalment Skyfall topping Malta’s box office for 2012.

Action films dominated last year’s box office overall, with the top five made up entirely of film’s from this genre.

Skyfall, starring Daniel Craig as suave British superspy Bond, was released in late October and is still showing at cinemas nationwide.

Three superhero smash-hits joined Skyfall in the top five: Marvel Avengers Assemble, The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman.

Fifth position was taken by action-fantasy epic The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is also still showing at cinemas.

The top 20 was dominated by Hollywood films and did not feature any films that were not in the English language.

In terms of longevity at the cinema, there were 31 films that played for nine weeks or more in theatres last year.

The Hunger Games ran longest at 22 weeks, followed by Ice Age 4: Continental Drift (16 weeks) and Marvel Avengers Assemble and Mirror Mirror (both 15 weeks).

A total of 163 feature films were released in cinemas by KRS Film Distributors last year, 16 less than 2011.

These included films from the US, the UK, France, Denmark, Norway, Spain, Indonesia, Australia, Canada, South Korea and 19 co-productions.

Thirty-two of the films were released and exhibited in 3D digital format.
