The police have enough evidence to issue charges on the oil bribery case that has rocked Enemalta, but more people have to be questioned.

Interrogators have questioned the man at the centre of the allegations, petrochemist Frank Sammut, who allegedly took kickbacks from Dutch company Trafigura for oil contracts with Enemalta in 2004.

The probe also includes Trafigura’s representative George Farrugia and Enemalta’s former chairman Tancred Tabone, who was escorted to Mater Dei mid-interrogation after he fell ill. Mr Farrugia entered the picture after correspondence indicating he had insider access to the corporation’s management.

Investigators also interviewed Minister Austin Gatt, who was responsible for Enemlta, but the session was mostly an information-gathering exercise.

The final decision on who is arraigned will involve the Attorney General, particularly because of different interpretations on time-bars.

FRANK PORTELLI SUGGESTS ACTION

Meanwhile, former PN council president Frank Portelli, writing on his facebook page this morning, said the Attorney General should ensure that the assets of all the suspects involved are ‘frozen’ as this would paralyse their activities.

He also suggested that Parliament should be reconvened urgently to enact the Whistleblowers’ Act, giving an amnesty to the first individual who exposes the whole truth .

"I expect that this would lead to a scramble among the suspects to be the first to squeal and benefit from the amnesty.

"This would show that the country means business and million of euros would be recovered," he said.

In a facebook comment, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando said he agreed with Dr Portelli's call, and he was sure the majority of MPs, including many Nationalists, agreed too.
