Smart City will be strengthening its operations in Malta and yesterday reiterated its commitment towards the multi-million-euro investment in an ICT city in Xgħajra.

At the same time, the Government renewed its pledge to cooperate with the project and appointed Keith Schembri, the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, on the board of directors.

The project was discussed in a meeting at Castille yesterday between Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Abdullatif AlMulla, the new head of Smart City Dubai responsible for all Smart City projects around the world.

Smart City said the Dubai company intended to strengthen its operations on the island by increasing its autonomy and independence.

“The management in Malta will be empowered to make key decisions and senior executive level appointments will be announced in the coming weeks,” Mr AlMulla said.

The Prime Minister said the Government was committed to give a new impetus to the project to attain its objectives.

“The Government has a strong mandate to translate the investment made into the creation of jobs. We believe that having a digital economy is an important instrument for economic growth to everyone’s benefit,” Dr Muscat said.

So far, Smart City Malta has invested €70 million in the project.

According to Mr AlMulla, by the end of 2013 the project will have three office blocks and two retail buildings, a grand fountain and a lagoon.
