Christmas came early for the Mary’s Angels Choir, largely because they spent most of summer recording an album of Maltese Christmas carols. Established at the parish of Attard, the choir is made up of boys and girls aged five and older.
The choir has taken part in several philantropic events and performed in various churches around Malta. The idea to record the Christmas album has been a challenging yet rewarding project; the end result, Il-Kewkba li Ddiet, features 10 Christmas carols that should instil a sense of nostalgia among those old enough to remember the time when Maltese carols were more prominent.
Another aim behind the album is to revive Malta’s cultural heritage, especially since the tendency to use carols in other languages seems to have grown stronger in recent years.
The CD will also raise funds for a good cause – a percentage of the proceeds from its sale will go to the Kampanja Familji fil-Bżonn.
The whole process has proved to be a very positive experience for the youngsters in the choir. Apart from the musical aspect, which required a commitment from the children and their parents to attend regular rehearsals and preparation for the recording , the philanthropic nature of the project has also left a positive imprint on the children.
The end result, featuring traditional carols such as Ninni la Tibkix Iżjed, Ninu Ninu tal-Milied, and O Ġesù Ħelwa Tarbija and more classic carols O Lejl ta’ Skiet, Ninġabru Nsara and Sliem Fuq Din l-Art should appeal to different generations.
The CD will be launched during a concert at the Attard parish church on Saturday at 7.30pm. Entrance is free. The album will be available to purchase after the concert along with more information about the Kampanja Familji fil-Bżonn.
