It was just over a year ago that the Maltese rock scene lost one of its veterans; veteran as in experience, of course, for guitarist Steve Borg was only 43 when he left this world for the great gig in the sky.
A couple of months later, some of his former bandmates from Purple Haze, the band he formed almost three decades ago, got together and gave a small performance during the 2013 Simon’s Pub Music Festival.
That gathering was the main stimulus behind the Remembering Steve Borg memorial concert that those same bandmates – among them Steve’s son Axel – will be now be staging.
With practically 30 years of history, Purple Haze has seen a good number of musicians pass through its ranks, so it is no surprise that the concert will feature several singers and musicians.
Certainly, some familiar faces are still very present in the Maltese music scene, and there are also a few others who had perhaps put away their instruments a while ago.
In the run-up to the event, a lot of rehearsing has obviously been going on, reviving some of the old songs from the Purple Haze songbook that will form an integral part of the set list on the night, as well as a few of the late guitarist’s personal favourite covers. It is also worth mentioning that the concert will feature a guest appearance by the Xirka Rock band, with whom Borg played his last concert.
The concert is taking place on Saturday at Hard Rock Café, Bay Street, Paceville. Doors open at 11pm and entrance is a €5 donation which will go to Hospice Malta. For more information, look up the event page on Facebook.
