Half the proceeds from the second University Ring Road Fun Run/Walk & Relay, organised by Malta University Sports & Leisure, will be donated to Hospice Malta. The event was organised with the help of the Birkirkara Scout Group, Emergency Fire Rescue Unit and Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club.
Helping 900 patients every year and supporting families going through difficult times, Hospice Malta has extended its palliative care services and is now offering end-of-life care and support not only to cancer or motor neurone disease patients but also to people with terminal lung, heart and kidney disease.
The day featured an individual five-kilometre run/walk, a 2km run/walk, a 5km relay for four-member teams and an 800m children’s fun run. Some 163 participants took part, including University rector Juanito Camilleri, who kickstarted the 5km run, took part in the 2km event and then presented awards to the winners.
Fabio Spiteri won the 5km event in a new 17:04 record. Dermot Galea placed second in 17:59 and Nicholas Micallef came third (18:35). Kevin Cassar won the first University employee award and Ian Sammut was the first University student to cross the finish line.
Nina Zammit was overall winner and first University student with a new record of 22:52 in the women’s category, followed by Christabelle Attard (23:56) and Christabel Saliba (24:03). Claire Azzopardi Lane won the first University employee award, which was made more special since she helped Michael Debattista, who has a visual disability, by being his guide.
The 2km event was won by nine-year-old Thomas Woods (8:10) and 10-year-old Mikela Martinez (8:22). Groups of participants – including a team from FCM Bank Ltd – walked the distance together.
The 5km relay was won by Savio AC in a new record of 15:42, followed by DG Tri Team A and the Capoeira Malta team. The engineering team won the first team of University employees award.
The 800m children’s fun run was all about participation and fun, with children aged three to 13 running around the track, encouraged and accompanied by parents and relatives.
