The Noble Paul Romano deep water semi-submersible drilling rig has spudded an oil exploration well south of Malta.

The well, called Hagar Qim-1, is being drilled in Block 7 of Area 4 off Malta, and is targeting 109 MMboe in Lower Eocene and Paleocene sands.

The exploration is being made by Phoencia Energy Co, a subsidiary of Genel Oil. Total depthof 450m is expected to be reached in two to three months.

Hagar Qim-1 is the 11th well to be drilled offshore Malta and is the first exploration well since 2002.
