Bus fares are set to rise, despite the fact that the state subsidy for the new
bus service will almost triple under an agreement between the government and Spanish transport port group Autobuses Urbanos de Leon (ALESA).

Sources at Transport Malta told The Sunday Times of Malta the deal has been
“practically wrapped-up” and is expected to be formally signed by the end of this month. The Spanish company is expected to be aid an annual subsidy of between between €24 and €29 million.

Transport Malta would only say that talks are continuing.

The Spanish company is expected to take over in March and introduce a number of new buses.
