Former US president George HW Bush is said to be making good progress since he fractured a bone in his neck during a fall last week.

Mr Bush's spokesman Jim McGrath said the former president is improving and his spirits are good.

The 91-year-old took a tumble at his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine, on Wednesday and remains in hospital.

The 41st president fractured his C2 vertebra, the second one below the skull, but doctors say it did not impinge on his spine or lead to any neurological problems.

Doctors say they expect Mr Bush to make a full recovery in three to four months.
