Anyone who has seen the Sex and the City episode in which a blotchyfaced Samantha (Kim Cattrall) dons a horrific black veil after a face peel that was supposed to make her look younger and fresher, understandably may have reservations about having the treatment.
Face peels are, however, not as scary as portrayed in this particular episode of the popular series.
One must keep in mind that there is a variety of different peels on the market. On the most basic level, one must distinguish between chemical and natural peels.
Qualified beautician Dorienne Cortis explains that chemical peels are more intense than ‘herbal’ peels and can go deeper into the skin than the superficial layers.
Chemical peels also use different types of acids such as alpha hydroxyl acid, beta hydroxy acid, retinoic acid, salicylic acid and lactic acid.
Although herbal peeling might feel more abrasive on the skin, it is milder than a chemical peel
“Extreme care must be taken during and after chemical peels,” she explains.
On the other hand, herbal peels, which work more like a scrub, have fewer side effects and contraindications.
“It’s much safer for the client as the therapist can control the intensity of the treatment. The effect is instant with the herbal peeling and, although it might feel more abrasive on the skin, it is actually milder than chemical peel,” she claims.
Herbal peels first require a “thorough” cleansing of the skin to remove any impurities the client might have.
The peel is then applied to the face and is rubbed in for a few minutes. An anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory mask is applied afterwards to calm and soothe the skin.
“The face remains red for the first 24 hours, then after a couple of days the client might start to peel.
“There is no pain or discomfort after the treatment but specific creams should be used, such as a hydrating and skin regenerating gel, an anti-inflammatory mask and, definitely, a sun screen with a high SPF.”
The result should be a “smoother and more radiant skin”. Herbal peels can also eliminate scars, pigmentation and are also safe on acne.
Cortis says that one can repeat the treatment once a week for up to four to six times if need be.
