Talks are taking place on projects involving Mosta Square. Allow me to make some comments.
The people of Mosta are rightly worried when they learn about such discussions for various reasons. One is the church. Another is parking, which could mean digging underground. This will make thousands of Mosta residents spend many a sleepless night.
People in the know were commenting that there already exists a big hole further up in the direction of the valley from which one can profit. And, who knows, one can find unused private spaces.
The authorities should check.
To my knowledge, the idea of an underground parking place in the vicinity of the church had been dropped some years back. So, please, hands off the church.
An interesting idea would be to create an open space starting from the corner of Curate Calleja Street to where the lion fountain stands, diverting vehicles coming from Constitution Street to lower Bridge Street (developing the narrow street known as Il-Ħanqa) and allowing traffic flowing as it is now through Congress Road.
It is up to the experts to decide on the details – how to deal with essential church services, such as marriages, funerals and processions.
