Thieves broke into Cospicua's parish church and stole various items of "substantial" value overnight, police have confirmed. 

The theft was reported at around 6.40am this morning, when people went to open Immaculate Conception parish church and noticed signs of a break-in. Once inside, they soon realised that various valuable items had been stolen.  

An inquiry into the theft is underway, police said.
