A Grand Harbour ferry service shuttling passengers between Cospicua and Valletta hit a rough patch this evening after rival boatsmen blockaded the vessel's Valletta docking quay.

Small boat owners blockaded the Lascaris Wharf quay in protest at what they feel is unfair competition by Valletta Ferry Services, which is offering an extended shuttle service coinciding with tonight's Notte Bianca activities. The ferry is scheduled to run until 2am.

A ferry boat filled with passengers from Cospicua was prevented from docking at 9.30pm, with small boat operators creating a cordon with their vessels to prevent the larger ship from reaching shore.

Police subsequently convinced boat owners to stand down, with the ferry allowed to dock and passengers disembarking at the shores of the capital city.

An Armed Forces spokesman confirmed that they had dispatched a patrol boat to help Valletta police manage the situation.

A police spokesman said the situation was under control. Valletta Ferry Services could not be reached for comment.
