The annual pilgrimage to Lourdes for the sick, organised by the Archdiocesan society UMTAL, has returned to Malta. The group of 156 travellers and a guide dog departed for Lourdes earlier last month. A team of doctors, nurses, carers and lay volunteers gave up their free time and, at their own expense, enrolled to look after over 40 patients and ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all.

A number of relatives also accompanied patients. Pilgrims were also welcome to join the group. This religious journey was led by the chaplain of the society and the Archbishop’s delegate, Fr Joseph Mizzi, parish priest of Santa Luċija.

Every year since 1930, UMTAL makes this pilgrimage possible for people who would not otherwise be able to visit this holy sanctuary. Patients and pilgrims attend the various religious functions celebrated by the universal Church, such as the International Mass, the Adoration of the Holy Eucharist and the Aux Flambeaux evening procession.

Other Mass celebrations are organised in Maltese, where the congregation participates in the sacraments of reconciliation and anointing of the sick. One of the highlights of this pilgrimage is the celebration of Mass in Maltese at Our Lady’s Grotto.

UMTAL is a non-profit making voluntary organisation. Those who wish to join next July pilgrimage as volunteers, patients or pilgrims can e-mail info@umtalmalta.org or visit UMTAL-Għaqda Trasport tal-Morda f’Lourdes.
