Two leading MEPs have made enquiries with separate European institutions about revelations concerning secret company 17 Black.

MEP Ska Keller, who serves as co-president of the Greens group in the European Parliament, has asked the European Commission to react to revelations that 17 Black is owned by one of the directors of the Electrogas consortium, which also includes German company Siemens.

Ms Keller, a German MEP, also asked the Commission what measures it intends to take about the revelations.

Separately, Dutch MEP Sopie in 't Veld called for a thorough investigation into 17 Black and asked for Europol to step in and "assess" the situation in Malta.

Saying that 17 Black has been "suspected of money-laundering", Ms in ‘t Veld said any possible links and payments between the company and Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi and chief of staff Keith Schembri needed to be brought to light.

"Europol was asked for an assessment of the information that has been revealed and the impact it may have on their involvement in Malta regarding the Daphne Caruana Galizia case," she told Times of Malta.

Last week, a joint investigation by Times of Malta and Reuters revealed that Electrogas power station director and Tumas Group CEO Yorgen Fenech was behind the company, which was named as a 'target client' of offshore companies opened by Dr Mizzi and Mr Schembri.

Mr Fenech is a shareholder and director of the new gas-fired power station, a project pushed and fronted by Dr Mizzi.

These new revelations are extremely worrying and should trigger an immediate and thorough investigation by the Maltese authorities, MEP Ms in 't Veld said.

The Dutch MEP asked Europol to intervene and "assess the current situation".

"Given the possible relevance for the ongoing investigation into the murder of Ms Daphne Caruana Galizia, we expect Europol to be fully involved in the follow up," she said.

Ms in ‘t Veld recently led a European Parliament mission to Malta to look into progress in the investigation into Ms Caruana Galizia's murder, and assess the situation of rule of law in the country.

The report summarising the meetings and conclusions of the MEPs will be presented in a meeting of the Civil Liberties committee on November 20.

'Incredulous'

Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola said Ms in 't Veld's comments had to be taken seriously.

"To me, this illustrates just how incredulous everyone is that Konrad Mizzi is allowed to continue to remain protected while operating with impunity as a minister," Dr Metsola said.

"Despite the seriousness and urgency of the situation, we have not yet seen a response from the police. This is clearly a matter that must be investigated by law enforcement authorities and we will keep demanding action," she added as she paid tribute to Daphne Project journalists.
