A Maltese driver has been arrested in Sicily after 231kg of marijuana were found in his trailer.

It is estimated to have a street value of €1.5 million.

The drug was found by sniffer dogs among frozen food items during a random search before the trailer was due to be driven onto the ferry to Malta. It was packed in 114 packages, perfectly sealed under vacuum.

The driver, 32, is being questioned by police in Ragusa.

The source of the drug is not yet known.
