Bank murder trial: 31 years jail for complicity
Joseph Zammit, 52, was last night jailed for 31 and a half years after jurors found him guilty of being an accomplice in the murder of bank messenger Alphonse Ferriggi over eight years ago.
After eight hours of deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict on seven of the eight counts in the bill of indictment, finding Mr Zammit guilty of being an accomplice in the murder of Mr Ferriggi on September 18, 2000.
In handing down judgment, Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono highlighted Mr Zammit’s more than colourful criminal record that dates back to 1978 and records 26 convictions for everything from traffic offences to drug possession and theft.
ST to shed up to 450 jobs this year
STMicroelectronics will be shedding up to 450 employees in Malta this year in line with its plans to downsize its worldwide operations. The news was announced by Finance Minister Tonio Fenech yesterday after holding two separate meetings with the company’s top management and the General Workers’ Union.

More than Love – Malta’s Song for Europe
It was More than Love which won Moira Stafrace and Christopher Scicluna the Song for Europe Festival last night amid cheers and applause. And Forsi, composed by Sammy Galea, with lyrics by Raymond Mahoney and sung by Dorin Galea and her son Manolito, triumphed in the Maltese Song Festival.
Moira and Christopher will represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin on April 30.
MLP allegations ‘storm in a teacup’
Mr Richard Muscat, the leader of the Nationalist delegation and co-chairman on the joint Euro-Maltese Parliamentary Committee, yesterday reacted strongly to the Malta Labour Party’s publication of a letter to committee chairman Alberto Michelini, sent to him by MLP deputy leader Dr George Vella.
Dr Vella accused Mr Muscat of “grossly partisan handling” of the committee’s business. Mr Muscat yesterday said Dr Vella’s allegations were unfounded, and described the MLP deputy leader’s failure to publish only his views, disregarding those of Mr Muscat, as “showing clear signs of intolerance”.

Autogyros for export project
Two former RAF bomber command pilots, Mr David Hayman and Wing Commander Kenneth Wallis, said yesterday they were planning to set up an industry in Malta to manufacture autogyros for export.
They said that if their plans materialise, they would employ at least 30 workers during the first year of operation.
Man found dead in Pietà
A middle-aged Englishman was found dead in his car parked at Borton Lane, Pietà near the Sa Maison Hotel yesterday at about 1.30pm.
Passers-by, who found the man resting on the steering wheel, informed the Police.
An inquiry was held by the Magistrate, after which the dead man was taken to hospital for a post mortem examination.
Gas meter explodes: two injured
Emanuel Gauci of Birkirkara and Oscar Crispino of Santa Venera, both workers of the Malta Gas Board, were injured when a gas meter they were working on in a premises in Sliema exploded yesterday.
