Aloysians lived up to their status as one of the leading handball clubs in the country after winning the pre-season Independence Cup in both the men and women categories.
In the men’s final, Aloysians edged out Kavallieri 12-10 while in the women’s contest, Aloysians had the better of La Salle in a tense penalty shoot-out after the match ended 12-12.
Five teams participated in the men’s tournament – Aloysians, La Salle, Luxol HMS and Kavallieri. Aloysians, Kavallieri, La Salle, Phoenix and Luxol competed in the women’s competition.
The Independence Cup was organised by Sport PN in conjunction with the Malta Handball Association (MHA).
Trophies were presented to the team captains by MHA president Louis Borg and David Agius, the Opposition spokesman for sports.
Meanwhile, the 2016/17 season officially kicks off this Saturday with the Super Cup matches.
Champions La Salle meet rivals and cup holders Aloysians in the women’s Super Cup, starting at 14.00.
The men’s final, between Aloysians, last year’s Super Cup winners, and champions Luxol kicks off at 16.00.
Vote of confidence
Louis Borg has been confirmed as MHA president after winning a vote of approval during the association’s annual general meeting. Borg was uncontested for his seat but still requested a vote of confidence from the club delegates attending the meeting.
“The MHA chief received resounding backing from the delegates present and will now preside over the local handball governing body for another term until 2020,” the MHA said in a statement.
Andrew Decelis has also retained his post as association vice-president for another four-year term.
