The resources of the various charities that care for abandoned animals, especially dogs, are meagre indeed, relying as they do solely on donations.

Up until the Community Chest Fund was taken over by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, these charities used to receive an annual L-Istrina contribution of about €500 each. Not much when compared to the handouts to other charities but a lifeline to animal welfare organisations that lead a hand-to-mouth existence.

I understand that the President and her committee have no interest whatsoever in animal welfare and have told the various charities as much. The annual contributions have, consequently, been stopped.

This is very sad. One of the hallmarks of a civilised society is the way it cares for its animals. On this score, given the widespread local animal abuse, Malta fails miserably. I appeal to the President to restore the L-Istrina grant to animal welfare charities and for her to actively champion animal welfare.
