The local basketball community will again come together on Boxing Day to raise funds for charity at the second All Star match at the pavilion in Ta’ Qali.

The match, launched last year, is intended to promote the sport and generate funds that will go directly to the Malta Community Chest Fund.

“We want to have a basketball celebration where both present and past basketball stars will give their contribution to a day of entertainment for spectators and raise donations for those really in need,” MBA chief Paul Sultana said yesterday.

The novelty in this year’s All-Star Day is the participation of football players who take on their peers from the hoops sport in a friendly encounter on court.

The list of footballers, past and current national team players, to feature include Andrew Cohen, Gilbert Agius, Carmel Busuttil, John Buttigieg and Ernest Barry.

The Boxing Day programme gets under way at 5pm.

The undercard features matches involving players from the basketball academy, basketball fans who take on the referees and a dunking competition.

The climax will be the All-Star matches from both men’s and women’s leagues.

“We’re doing this mainly to raise funds so we expect the sporting public to cooperate and make their presence felt.

“Our goal is also to surpass the €2,100 we raised last year,” Sultana said.
