Women’s league champions Birkirkara and cup holders Mosta will be locking horns in the season-opening match at the Centenary Stadium on Monday when the Super Cup will be contested by the best two teams from the previous campaign (kick-off: 8 p.m.).

The Stripes won the league title in 2011-12 after a scorching run that saw them retaining their unbeaten record throughout the entire championship. However, in the cup final in May they finally met their match as Mosta fought bravely to secure the other major honour at stake.

Mosta had to go all the way to lower the Birkirkara colours for the first time last season as they only succeeded in claiming the cup following a tense penalty shoot-out which they won 4-2 as the 1-1 stalemate stood even after extra-time.

In a statement, the Malta FA said the women’s game on our islands is increasing in popularity and this was mainly evident from statistical data relating to a growing number of players participating in the two divisions.

“There are also better quality players in the competitions we organise,” the Malta FA said.

The women’s Super Cup was first held in season 2004-2005 with Birkirkara winning that first edition.

The Stripes went on to land the Super Cup twice more, with Mosta emulating them with three successes, including that of last year. Hibs come next with two wins.

Prior to the Super Cup on Monday the MFA will host a Get a Friend Festival for girls aged between nine and 16 years.

The two-hour event, starting at 5 p.m., is part of an ongoing programme organised by the Technical Centre and aimed at promoting football as a fun and enjoyable activity which should also strengthen the girls’ skills.

The women’s league is due to start on September 18 with the opening match from the First Division to be played at the Mġarr Ground between Mġarr United and Gozo FC.

Futsal Super Cup
The men’s Futsal Super Cup, which was cancelled on Monday due to inclement weather, will now be played tomorrow.

The match between Balzan and Lija Athletic, at the Corradino Sports Pavilion, starts at 7.30 p.m.
