Steve Borg was yesterday banned for three matches by the UEFA Disciplinary Commission following his dismissal in Malta’s 2-0 defeat to Croatia in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Zagreb earlier this month.

The Malta defender was shown a straight red card by referee Vladislav Bezborodov after he clashed with Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic 30 minutes into the match.

It is understood that UEFA decided to impose a three-match ban on Borg after the referee wrote in his match report that the Valletta defender was sent off for violent conduct.

Borg will now miss the national team’s next three Euro 2016 qualifiers, against Norway (October 10) and Italy (October 13) at the National Stadium and the away trip to Bulgaria on November 16.
