Women’s league champions Mosta will launch their title defence with a match against Raiders Luxol, the team they beat in their last match in April to secure the championship crown for the first time in the club’s history.

Seven teams will be competing in the top flight in the 2011-12 championship with the other five sides being Birkirkara, the cup winners, Hibernians, Gozo and the newly-promoted duo Pembroke Athleta and Marsa.

The new season gets underway with the Super Cup clash between Mosta and Birkirkara on September 13. The first championship matches are scheduled for September 20 and the league will finish by March 27 after which the KO competition will be played.

Next month, Mosta will be playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying round – a mini-tournament in Serbia. They were drawn in the same group as Glasgow City (Scotland), Klaksvik (Faroe Islands) and Spartak Jaffa (Serbia).

The Malta FA said that one team will be relegated to Division Two at the end of the season and two will be promoted to the top flight to increase the teams to eight.

League matches will be played on Tuesday evenings at various pitches, namely the Luxol Stadium, Melita, Mġarr, Mosta, Pembroke, Sta Luċija, Tedesco Stadium, Żebbuġ and Sannat.

Eleven teams will be playing in the Second Division with Mġarr, who were relegated last season, among the favourites to regain their place in the top flight.
