Maltese shooters enjoyed great success at the Fazz’a Italian Green Cup in Umbria as William Chetcuti placed second in the double trap while Nathan Lee Xuereb won the junior competition.

Chetcuti produced a strong performance in the qualifying round of the senior event after compiling scores of 29, 29, 29, 30 and 28 to amass 145 points and place second behind Russian Vasily Mosin who topped the leaderboard on 147.

In the semi-finals, Chetcuti, hit 29 clays from 30 to set up a gold medal showdown with Mosin. But the Russian was too strong in the final, hitting a straight to win 30-28.

In the juniors shoot, Xuereb started slowly hitting scores of 27, 26, 23, 29 and 27 to finish third on 132.

Xuereb stepped up in the semis, hitting 28 to finish joint second with Gorsuch and set up a shoot-off.

The Maltese shooter showed great mental resilience to win the shoot-off 8-7 and reach the final.

Xuereb left his best for last as he beat Italy’s Emanuel Buccolieri in the final 29-23 to win the title.
