William Chetcuti was unable to repeat the same feat of his only other appearance in the World Cup Double Trap finals yesterday as he finished eighth in Abu Dhabi, failing to make the cut after hitting two clays less than the sixth-placed shooter in the competition.
In 2005, Chetcuti was unlucky not to make the medals zone as one point had kept him away from a third-place finish. However, the story was different yesterday as Chetcuti blew his chances following a poor second-round score of 42.
Chetcuti, whose highlight this season was securing a berth in next year’s London Olympics after winning the Beijing World Cup shoot in April, had a similar 46 in the first and third rounds for an overall 134 points.
Italian Daniele di Spigno also failed to make the cut when he lost a shoot-off with three other conten-ders who completed the first three rounds on a similar 136.
In all, 13 competitors took part.
The title went to India’s Ronjan Sodhi. He kept his cool in sweltering temperatures to prevail in another shoot-off to determine the winner.
The other contestant was Binyuan Hu, of China. Both had tied with a score of 187 points.
1. R. Sodhi (India, 142+45) 187+2; 2. B. Hu (China, 144+43) 187; 3. V. Fokeev (Russia, 138+47) 185; 4. M. Innocenti (Italy, 136+44) 180; 5. W. Eller (US, 136+42) 178; 6. P. Wilson (GBR, 136+42) 178.
