The Church has told Anġelik Caruana to refrain from making public any messages he claims to receive from Our Lady.

Mr Caruana will instead speak with the Church authorities, who “will continue to receive and evaluate all the information and scientific research with respect to the case”.

In a statement late yesterday afternoon, the Church also said that Mr Caruana would henceforth limit visits to his Borġ in-Nadur apparition spot to once a month, calling there on the 26th of every month.

Other members of the public were welcome to continue visiting Borg in-Nadur, at Birżebbuġa, as they pleased, a Church spokesman said.

Mr Caruana claims to have had multiple apparitions of Our Lady, dating back to December 2005. He has built up a sizeable number of devoted followers who visit the Borg in-Nadur site.

Many of his messages were previously recorded live and then conveyed to his audience of devotees within the hour.

According to Mr Caruana, the Virgin Mary speaks to him in Maltese. He says she has spoken to him about a range of subjects, from the power of the rosary to natural disasters and the dangers of divorce.

He has spoken of an archangel called Uriel, which Mr Caruana says is only visible to him, and says that, on various occasions, Our Lady showed him visions of hell.

In January 2011, Italian news agencies reported that Mr Caruana caused a security scare during the Pope’s weekly audience at the Vatican, when he allegedly tried to climb over a security barrier to hand-deliver a letter to the Pontiff.
