As of last week, a Mr Green branded rib may be spotted scouring the shoreline each morning. This is part of an eight-week Clean the Seas project that the online gaming operator, Mr Green, has launched in collaboration with the University of Malta.
The project is a highly structured initiative to clean the coastal waters and spread awareness regarding the health of the Mediterranean Sea. Under direction of International Ocean Institute director Alan Deidun, each morning the Mr Green rib sets out with a team of students from the University of York, UK, reading for an MSc. in Marine Environmental Management, together with students from Prof. Deidun’s department.

The students together with Mr Green employees are physically cleaning the shores and waters around Malta while simultaneously collecting data on the health levels of the sea as part of an academic study about the marine environment and plastics.
The Clean the Seas project was born out of the vision of Mr Green CEO, Jesper Kärrbrink, who has a combined passion for a healthy environment and a love of the ocean. “We look to drive awareness of the health status of the sea by spreading the knowledge we obtain from the studies and from the physical appearance we have around the beaches of Malta. We hope to be able to leave an educational and sincere effect on the individuals we meet throughout the summer and through sharing the research material we produce,” said Mr Kärrbrink.
The beaching of debris along the coastline has, to date, only been addressed through snapshot studies involving field monitoring implemented on a small scale such as individual beaches. The operational and systematic monitoring of beached litter is also considered an indicator for Descriptor 10 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).
Through this initiative the University of Malta is carrying out a study to characterise a number of descriptors related to beached debris (litter, seagrass debris, etc) along a stretch of coastline enclosed within the North-East MPA.
“The anticipated outputs from this study include a preliminary identification of debris beaching hotspots along the monitored beaches and a better understanding of the coastal dynamics of beaching, pursuant to providing corresponding recommendations to coastal managers,” said Prof. Deidun.
