She’s just 17, but her young age hasn’t held budding local artist Andi back from stepping out into the public eye with debut single We Can Try. Launched via an accompanying music video on You Tube around three weeks ago, Andi’s first musical offering sounds like a relatively simple song upon first listen.
Underneath the optimistic sway of its lyrics however, the song, which was recorded, mixed and produced by Peter Borg at Railway Studios, has an emphatic piano timbre and a sophisticated pop element that have collectively endeared the artist to local radio listeners.
Andi’s love for music first surfaced when she took up piano at a very young age, later developing her songwriting as she discovered a love for singing and writing lyrics. As a result, she started vocal training under the guidance of soprano Gillian Zammit, through whom Andi ventured into the world of musical theatre.
Here, she met Jean Marc Cafà, whom she describes as “the walking encyclopaedia for the performing arts”, under whose tutorage she continues to study.
Citing the likes of Lana Del Rey, Emeli Sandé, One Republic and Coldplay among her musical influences, Andi says she believes music is the most powerful way of expressing oneself and feels inspired by the positive feedback her song has been receiving.
