I hate empty niches. An empty niche conveys a message: a job has not been completed and there is disagreement over what to put in it. Two empty niches in the front of a very prominent building at the heart of our capital city cry out for action.
Last Sunday, Albert Ganado (‘Two missing monuments’, The Sunday Times of Malta, January 17) expressed his shame at the fact that neither Francesco Laparelli nor Gerolamo Cassar were ever commemorated by means of a monument in Valletta.
With Valletta 2018 looming, I believe it is very fitting for these two engineers to have a monument in Valletta. And what better place than those two empty niches at the front of the Conventual Church. Those two niches need not remain empty forever.
