Former Valletta and Malta forward Tony Calleja passed away yesterday morning, aged 71.

Calleja was born in Valletta on March 26, 1943. He was the son of Manwel Calleja, founder of Valletta Prestons and co-founder of Valletta FC in 1943.

Tony Calleja represented Valletta at all levels, from minors right through to the senior team.

Calleja, who captained Valletta and won the league championship in all categories, made his senior debut on February 25, 1962 in a 6-2 win over St Patrick.

Between 1961/62 and 1968/69, he played 77 games, scoring 25 goals.

During his career, Calleja won the following honours: Division One Championship in 1962/63, FA Trophy in 1963/64, Scicluna Cup in 1963/64 and Cassar Cup in 1965/66 and 1967/68.

He was capped once by Malta in the 1969 friendly match against Austria (1-3).

Calleja’s funeral will take place tomorrow at the Fatima Sanctuary in Gwardamangia at 9.30am.
