Ian Grima fended off strong competition to win the All Malta Skeet Trophy, organised by the Malta Shooting Sport Federation (MSSF) at its Bidnija ranges yesterday.

The skeet event was on 125 clays with the top six shooters moving into the semi-finals and medal matches, both on 16 clays.

Darren Vella led the field at the end of the qualifying round with 113 points while Grima, Bozidar Dimitrov and Clive Farrugia were tied on 110 points.

Vella dropped out of contention for the title as he scored 12 points in the semis. Dimitrov hit 14 while Grima beat Farrugia for the other spot in the decisive match in a shoot-off after both scored 13 points.

The gold medal match also went into a shoot-off after Dimitrov and Grima struck 12 clays.

Grima had the final word after Dimitrov missed the fifth clay in the shoot-off.

Farrugia was third after edging out Vella in another shoot-off after the two reeled off 15 points.

The trophies of the All Malta Skeet were sponsored by Grezzju Agius.

This week, the MSSF will host the fourth Malta International Double Trap Grand Prix, on Thursday, followed by the Malta International Trap GP over the weekend.
