Fondation de Malte recently launched the fifth volume of its successful Telos series with a special edition dedicated to the memory of the late President Guido de Marco.
It recalled his involvement in the Independent World Commission on the Ocean (IWCO) as one of its presitigious vice presidents.
Published in 1998, the report of IWCO, chaired by the then President of Portugal, Mario Soares, set forth a road plan for international sustainable maritime governance.
During the launch at the seat of the Fondation, executive director David Raphaël Busuttil highlighted how this special volume of Telos was put together, with Fondation approaching members of IWCO to contribute articles to the book.
A personal message from Dr Soares was read out, as he could unfortunately not be present .
Dr Soares’s celebration of Prof. de Marco is a highlight of the publication.
Mario de Marco then gave an overview of his father’s international career, on his visionary work in UN organisations and his support for initiatives relating to global issues, in particular those relating to responsibilities towards future generations whose rights should be secured and protected by a guardian.
Salvino Busuttil, president of Fondation de Malte, reminisced on the many times he and Guido de Marco worked together on world affairs, especially in the IWCO, with one as treasurer and the other as vice president. He also dwelt on Prof. De Marco’s unique work for enhancing Euro-Mediterranean relations.
The event was well attended by close members of the De Marco family and friends as well as resident ambassadors and other distinguished guests from many international organisations.
