Kirsty Caruana and Andreana Zammit continued to distinguish themselves at the 2012 COJI Games as the young Maltese gymnasts won a spate of medals on the third day of competition in Sardegna.

Their exploits took Malta’s medal haul in gymnastics to 10 after Caruana and Zammit clinched no fewer than eight on Saturday.

Caruana took gold in floor and vault plus another two bronze medals in bars and beam.

For her part, Zammit struck gold on bars, won two silver medals on floor and beam and a bronze on vault.

In athletics, Rebecca Fitz placed a creditable fourth in the triple jump to contribute more points to the Malta girls team’s tally in the overall classification.

Bradley Mifsud did likewise for the boys’ team after winning a bronze medal in the javelin.

Malta took part in the relays. In the boys’ section, Nicholas Mallia, Luke Bezzina, Eric Borg Saywell and Thomas Farrugia were fourth out of seven teams.

The girls fared better as Thalia Massa, Robyn Zammit, Nicole Gatt and Fitz improved from fourth to third to secure bronze.

In the final classification, the Maltese boys finished sixth and the girls seventh.

In sailing, Thomas Bonello Ghio and Zach Zammit finished 10th and 13th respectively in the 21-strong optimist competition while, in the women’s event, Rebecca Briffa was 10th among 20 participants.

Featuring the participation of around 1,000 young athletes from 12 islands representing eight nations, the Youth Games are regarded by many NOCs as the ideal launchpad for budding youngsters and their fledgling careers in sport.

The closing ceremony of this year’s edition of the COJI Games will take place tomorrow in Sardinia.
