Hibernians are the new champions of the BOV women’s football league after beating Birkirkara following a tense penalty shoot-out at the Centenary Stadium on Friday. A decider for the title was needed after both teams had finished the regular season on equal points. The last time the Paolites had won the league was in 2008. Birkirkara were champions four times in the last five years but on Friday they had to bow to Hibs who now lead the all-time list with 10 titles. Hibs were twice in the lead thanks to goals from Dorianne Theuma with the Stripes hitting back through Kelly Agius Pace and Rachel Cuschieri to force extra-time. Hibs won the shoot-out 4-3. This season, the Paolites and Birkirkara could figure in yet another title match as they were kept apart in the KO semi-finals draw.
