Hibernians 9
Ħamrun Spartans 0

Ħamrun Spartans conceded yet another heavy defeat in the BOV Women’s League as Hibernians kept up their challenge at the top of the standings with a sound 9-0 over the Reds at the Luxol Stadium.

The Spartans were looking to score their first championship goal in this match and avoid another drubbing following the previous 7-0 upset to champions Birkirkara.

However, despite their commitment and the fine saves of goalkeeper Christine Galea, Ħamrun were outclassed by their more-quoted opponents who went in for the break leading 3-0 following a Ylenia Carabott double and another goal from Charlene Zammit.

Galea suffered an injury just before half-time and with her stand-in also unavailable through injury coach Mario Gouder had to deploy outfield player Lilian Cremona in goal for the rest of the match.

In the second half, Hibs added six more goals through Carabott, Zammit, Corissa Vella White, Ruth Steer Chetham, Rebecca Vella and Gaby Tonna.

Hibs coach Jose Borg was an elated man at the end of the match.

“This was another fine showing by Hibs,” he said.

“We had three changes from our previous match and against Ħamrun we also effected five substitutions and the team never lost its balance. That augurs well for the rest of the season as we need a strong squad to reach our objectives. Indeed, the future looks bright for this team.”

Referee: Sandro Spiteri.

Tarxien Rainbows 0
Mġarr United 3

In another match from the women’s top flight played re-cently, Ray Vella’s Mġarr United registered their second win from as many outings this season following a 3-0 victory over Tarxien Rainbows.

The Rainbows were playing at their home ground in Tarxien and that, perhaps, helped them to produce a better display than their opening match against title contenders Mosta.

However, Mġarr were still the better side on the pitch and after first-half goals from Abigail Camilleri and Daniela Ebejer, they went on to administer their lead wisely before Brenda Borg rounded up the score to 3-0 just before the final whistle.

Referee: Thomas Debono.
