Europharma Ltd, operators of Mamas and Papas and representatives of Medela and Sebamed in Malta, celebrated International Day of the Midwife on May 5 with an event hosting community and hospital midwives.
The International Confederation of Midwives established the day following suggestions and discussion among member associations in the late 1980s, then launched the initiative formally in 1992. The aim of the day is to celebrate midwifery and to raise awareness about the importance of midwives’ work
Midwives in Malta also organised a five-kilometre-walk from Pietà to St Julian’s as a sign of commitment to tackling global inequalities in maternal and newborn mortality and to highlight local issues in midwifery service provision.
An evening seminar discussed the latest technology to support new mothers and lactation professionals to ensure breastfeeding success, which was followed by a discussion on the importance of using skin care products for babies with a pH value of 5.5 to support the development of their barrier functions.
The evening proceeded with a social event whereby midwives got together to wine and dine and have a well-deserved good time outside their normal work environment.
