Q: What is your current operation in Malta?

We believe that our employees deserve excellent treatment

A: Tipico Malta (headquarters) currently employs 110 employees from 16 different nationalities. The nature of this business is all about being agile, creative and on the frontline of online innovation and we have managed to build a young, dynamic and talented group of people with a drive to succeed.

Tipico is a very diverse and luxurious place to work and we believe that our employees deserve the best. Our offices are situated at Portomaso Tower on three different floors, and we are currently looking to invest in a fourth floor, as we shall be employing up to 100 people over the next 14 months. The majority of these jobs will be available to Maltese people.

Tipico believes in flat hierarchies with an executive open door policy – employees are not only offered very competitive salary packages but are also given the opportunity to grow and develop their individual personal and business skills.

Q: What makes Tipico a great place to work?

A: There are a number of factors which contribute to a great working experience. In our case, our brand slogan says it all: ‘At Tipico, we invest in our people.’ We believe that all employees must be treated in the best way possible. The happier our employees are, then the happier our customers will be.

Q: How important is continuous training for your organisation?

A: Training is a vital part of our strategy. Training may vary from induction training to very specific and complex training and long-term courses. We constantly invest in the development of our people as this will improve results.

This year we have introduced a performance management programme whereby all employees have their individual business objectives to achieve – these are directly related to our company’s objectives as well as to the employee’s personal development objectives. All objectives are linked to training, mentoring and personal education because through our leaders, we want to recognise, shape, inspire and promote potential talent.

Q: In what way do you invest in training?

A: At Tipico we make sure that every individual grows to new levels on a holistic basis annually by setting personal development objectives. In combination with a versatile list of training and courses offered on the job, 2012 saw the launch of a two-year graduate programme for local emerging potential, leadership development programmes, individual coaching, English lessons, office software training, and soft skills training. Currently, we are designing new programmes for 2013.

Q: In what other ways do you invest in your staff?

A: Having a healthy business is great – however, we also want our employees to be healthy. We believe that our employees deserve excellent treatment and every employee will be given an individual and company performance bonus at the end of each year.

However, investment value goes way beyond monetary terms and we are very happy to provide our employees with health insurance plans, dental plans, highly developed and ergonomic office furniture, state of the art technical equipment, daily fresh fruit, gym incentives, team dinners, team building events, company apartments to support new employees coming from abroad to work for the organisation, as well as at least four major social events every year for all employees to socialise with each other without having to face any work pressures. As Jan Bolz, our CEO, says: “Tipico must be a fun place to work.”

Q: At Tipico, what is career advancement based on – qualifications, meritocracy, or both?

A: A high talent level is required to operate our online business and the obvious starting point for recruitment entails looking for highly qualified people who fit the role’s specifications. At Tipico, we have a good number of people who have an MBA or a Ph.D. – however, it is in our interest to recognise, educate and train other individuals who have started working at Tipico in a non-managerial role to become top class team leaders and managers.

At Tipico, every employee will be given a fair chance to advance within the company. We are constantly on the lookout for personalities with high performance, drive, self-initiative, creativity, enthusiasm, dedication, good educational background and who are team players.

Q: How does Tipico attract and recruit new talent?

A: Together with Thomas Mahoney, who is responsible for Tipico’s employer brand, this year we have managed to attract new talent.

We are constantly on the lookout for talent coming directly from University, MCAST and other local and international educational institutions. We conduct constant marketing campaigns and are building strong associations with talent pools and groups via networking events. Internally we also promote a recommend-a-friend scheme. Other sources such as iRecruitment and recruitment agencies are also very important to us.

In 2013 we aim to take our employer branding activities to another level including open office weekends, community events and role consultancy sessions. For all those who believe that they possess the right skills to work for us, feel free to forward your CV to hr@tipico.com
